Skin needling is known by various names in the medical and cosmetic industry, including Dermal-rolling, Percutaneous Collagen Induction (PCI) and Collagen Induction Therapy to name a few. The definition of skin needling can be explained as tiny needle punctures that, depending on the length of needle used, are made through the outermost layer of the skin or create microscopic breaks in the blood vessels immediately beneath the surface of the epidermis.
Today, needling has been scientifically proven to work with the skin’s natural functions to stimulate regeneration leading to an overall improved appearance of the skin. In an ideal skin-regeneration situation the aim should always be to keep the epidermis intact at all times, to encourage natural collagen and elastin synthesis as well as to stimulate the release of the body’s own skin related growth factors. Ideally, there should be no damage to the skin and needling represents the perfect solution for this challenge.
The results of needling were first observed by chance through the tattooing of face lift scars for camouflage. Today, Environ Skin Care founder Dr Des Fernandes is known as the global guru of non-invasive skin needling and has almost 20 years of experience with this popular skin rejuvenating treatment. He first started experimenting with needling in 1994 and designed what we know as today’s roller in 1997 on a flight to Cape Town.
In 2021 Dr Des Fernandes was honoured by The Skin Cancer Foundation of South Africa
with the first of its kind Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the techniques and technologies associated with skin rejuvenation as well as photoprotection. He was also recognised for his contribution to the field of topical antioxidants and vitamins to which he has dedicated more than 30 years of his life.
Depending on the indication, a variety of needle lengths can be used. We offer three different types of needling devices:
Cosmetic needling is perfectly designed to use daily, as part of a professionally recommended home regime to aid the absorption of topically applied, vitamin enriched skin care products.
Medical and Surgical needling is performed globally by trained skin care professionals who work under the supervision of the medical doctor in a special environment that is conducive to this highly specialised type of treatment.
The client’s skin needs to be prepared on Vitamin A, C and E for a minimum of three to four weeks in order to get the best results. Strict home care and treatment protocols need to be followed by both the practitioner and the client. Whichever method is performed, it is important that correct sterilisation measures are followed.
The methods of medical and surgical needling are based on repeated puncturing of the skin’s surface with fine needles. Microscopic breaks are created in the papillary or reticular dermis of the skin, stimulating the release of blood platelets which release a series of growth factors and initiates the wound healing process. A new, natural collagen and elastin network and a thicker epidermis can be expected as a result, with very little down time.
Needling is the ideal treatment method for the improvement of skin appearance, texture and quality. It is a safe and effective treatment for all skin and photo types.
Research has shown that our needling system proves to be effective in skin rejuvenation, treatment of general scarring, burn scars, stretch marks and in preparation of tissue pre-and post-op to also induce effective healing.
